Product Price Markup with Specs

Product Price Markup with Specs

Spec price markup allows you to change a product's price based on the value a buyer user selects in a selection spec.

There are three price markup types that will each affect the final price in a different way. You can setup one markup per variable spec.

  1. Fixed Amount per Unit – Use this option to charge a one-time markup for each book/packet/file. The unit is the order quantity. Example: Binding – one staple per packet ordered.

  2. Fixed Amount per Line – Use this option to charge a one-time fee for this line item in the cart. This is independent of the number of pages in the file and the number of copies ordered. Example: Express shipping base charge or special handling/wrapping regardless of the size of the order.

  3. Percentage of Line Total – Use this option to increase the per page price. The increase will have to be based on a percentage of the per page price in the price schedule. Example: Paper – standard paper is the base price but if you want card stock, the cost increases by 50%.

Below is an example for a variable print document in which the user can upload a PDF and define finishing options.  It includes multiple variable specs with different markup options.

1.   Create a quick print product and set up the price schedule with a base per-page price (in this, example the base is $0.20 per page.

2.   Create the following variable specs:
      a.   Binding
i.   Spec Type: Selection
ii.   Selection Type: Drop Down List
iii.   Associate price markups with options – True
iv.   Price Markup Type: Fixed amount per unit
v.  Values:
                  1.   Comb Bound - Black vinyl back (Markup: $2.25)
                  2.   Coil Bound – Black vinyl back(Markup: $1.25)
                  3.   Stapled (Markup: $0.25)
                  4.   No Binding (Markup: $0.00)
      b.  Ink
i.   Spec Type: Selection
ii.   Selection Type: Drop Down List
iii.   Associate price markups with options – True
iv.   Price Markup Type: Percentage of line total
v.  Values:

                  1.   Black & White, Single—sided (Markup: 0%)
                  2.   Black & White, Double—sided (Markup: 0%)
                  3.   Color, Single—sided (Markup: 100%)
                  4.   Color, Double—sided (Markup: 100%)
      c.  Paper
i.   Spec Type: Selection
ii.   Selection Type: Drop Down List
iii.   Associate price markups with options – True
iv.   Price Markup Type: Percentage of line total
v.  Values:
                  1.   Standard White 20lb – for Black & White only (Markup: 0%)
                  2.   Premium White 28lb (Markup: 10%)
                  3.   3 Hole Punched White 20lb – for Black & White only (Markup: 20%)
                  4.   3 Hole Punched White 28lb (Markup: 30%)
                  5.   Transparencies (Markup: 40%)

      d.   Upload File
i.   Spec Type: File
ii.  File Type: Printable PDF
iii.  Upload Instructions: Please upload the file to be printed. The base price will be multiplied by the number of pages in the uploaded PDF file.

3.   Calculate Unit Pricing
  1. Get the right price schedule and find the unit price for the given quantity.
  2. Adjust prices where multiple line items use the same schedule and cumulative pricing is enabled for the schedule.
  3. Multiply by the number of pages in any file spec of type "Printable PDF." In theory, there could be more than one file spec of this type for the same product.
  4. Apply price markups associated with selection specs. Apply all percentage-based markups to the unit price as it is after step three, before other spec markups are applied. (Percentage markups would affect specs intended to be calculated in relation to the number of PDF pages.)
  5. Apply the costs of any list specs.
Example Calculations:

File Uploaded: 5 page document                     Per Page
Binding: Staple – $0.25/unit                                n/a
Unit Price: $0.20/page                                       0.20
Ink: Color – 100% increase/page                         0.20
Paper: Transparency – 40% increase/page            0.08
Per Page Total:                                                $0.48
(0.48 * 5) = 2.40
                  + .25 (staple)
               = 2.65/Document

If 10 copies were ordered, the unit price would be $2.65 and the line item price would be $26.50.
