This article provides best practices in the configuration of placeholder items in XM Cloud.

Placeholder items can be managed on two levels:

• Globally, under placeholder settings located at /sitecore/layout/Placeholder Settings.
• At the site level, under site-specific placeholder settings at /sitecore/content/{site_name}/Presentation/Placeholder Settings.

Following best practices, each placeholder item under Placeholder Settings must have a unique Placeholder Key. Using the same Placeholder Key in different placeholder items might lead to unexpected scenarios, for example:

• If the same Placeholder Key has been defined both in a global and in a site-specific placeholder item, the placeholder item from the site-specific scope will be used.
• If the same Placeholder Key has been defined in multiple global placeholder items, some placeholder item that is found first will be used.

We strongly recommend that you avoid using identical Placeholder Keys in different placeholder items.

When it comes to configuring placeholder restrictions, you can set them either in global or in site-specific placeholder items. Keep in mind that restrictions set on a global placeholder affect all pages on every site that uses that placeholder. To prevent such a broad application, it is recommended that you set placeholder restrictions on site-specific placeholders.
