Issues when storing Sitecore files on Mac and Unix systems

Description

The Sitecore Client functionality, such as Media Dialogs, Control Panel, Analytics areas, etc. may not function properly when using Mac or Unix based file storage for keeping Sitecore files.

For example, this may happen when Sitecore files are hosted on a network-attached storage managed by the Mac or Unix based system, or when the files were previously used to reside on such a storage.

Solution

To resolve the issue, consider the following solution:

  1. Rename the .Sitecore.Speak.Important.config file to _Sitecore.Speak.Important.config.
  2. Ensure that this file is not marked as hidden after it is transferred to the Windows based storage.

    Show hidden files
View hidden files and folders in Windows

Technical Details

The issue is caused by the SPEAK-related /App_config/Include/.Sitecore.Speak.Important.config file containing dot in its name.

Files with names that begin with the dot are treated as hidden on Mac and Unix operating systems. When pulling or moving such files back to Windows, they are marked as hidden, resulting in being ignored when Sitecore is running.
