One of the following messages might occur while saving a page in the Experience Editor:

After parsing a value, an unexpected character was encountered:...

or

An Error Occurred

The issue occurs when:

• Double quotes or special characters are used in the link field description or rendering parameters.
• The Image field is used as one of the rendering parameters.
• A rich text field value contains special characters or double quotes (under some specific circumstances).

Solution

To resolve the issue, download and install the hotfixes compatible with the affected product version:

• For Sitecore XP 8.1.2 and 8.1.3: SC Hotfix 154739-1 Experience Editor 2.0.0.zip
• For Sitecore XP 8.2.0: SC Hotfix 195920-1 Experience Editor 3.0.0.zip
• For Sitecore XP 8.2.1 and 8.2.2: SC Hotfix 190256-1 Experience Editor 3.0.1.zip
• For Sitecore XP 8.2.3 and later: SC Hotfix 195920-1 Experience Editor 3.0.2.zip

Be aware that the hotfixes were built for specific Sitecore XP versions, and must not be installed on other Sitecore XP versions or in combination with other hotfixes. In case any other hotfixes have already been installed on a certain Sitecore XP instance, send a request for a compatibility check to Sitecore Support.

Note that the ZIP file contents must be extracted to locate installation instructions and related files inside. The hotfixes must be installed on a CM instance and then synced with other instances using standard development practices.
