The following issues related to xDB, Email Experience Manager (EXM) and List Manager can occur in a scaled environment under high load conditions:
- EXM and xDB reporting systems show incorrect statistics.
- EXM does not process email messages or processes them incorrectly.
- xDB data processing is delayed.
- Reporting database rebuilding is slow.
- The List Manager continuously shows the Please note that this list is currently being built and is locked message.
- The list importing process is slow.
Sitecore provides hotfixes for the issues mentioned. Follow the instructions below to apply the hotfix to your solution.
- Use the SOLR search provider. The hotfix does not support Coveo and Lucene search providers.
- To apply the hotfix properly, the sitecore_analytics_index index must have a definition for TimedIndexRefreshStrategy. If the sitecore_analytics_index definition was customized to disable the timed index update, the changes must be reverted before installing the hotfix.
Upgrade to Sitecore XP 8.1 Update-3 (rev. 160519).
We strongly recommend upgrading to Sitecore XP 8.1 Update-3 (rev. 160519). If you are experiencing the mentioned problems and cannot upgrade, apply the following hotfix to address the issue:

Upgrade to Sitecore XP 8.1 Update-3 (rev. 160519).

Note: Install the EXM hotfix after the CMS hotfix.
Upgrade to Sitecore XP 8.2 Update-2 (rev. 161221) and EXM 3.4 Update-1.
The issues mentioned above were fixed in Sitecore XP 8.2 Update-2 and EXM 3.4 Update-1. For more details, check the release notes:
If an out-of-process session state provider is used, do the following:
- Stop all Sitecore XP instances sharing the same Session database.
- If MongoDB session state provider is used, drop the Session database.
- If SQL Server session state provider is used, replace the Session database with a clean one from the Sitecore XP installation package.
- Start Sitecore XP instances.
- The hotfixes are Sitecore packages that must be installed through the Installation Wizard application.
- Check the detailed list of changes and instructions at the Read Me step of the package installation process or in the linked pdf files.
- CMS hotfixes must be applied to every Sitecore XP instance of the scaled environment. EXM hotfixes must be applied only to Content Management instances.

- If a hotfix for another Sitecore XP version is needed, another Sitecore hotfix has already been installed in your solution, or if you have any additional questions, contact Sitecore Support.
- These hotfixes are not compatible with xDB Cloud.
